Bali Airport to Bedugul: Highland Lake District Transfer 2026

Your guide to reaching Bedugul — Bali’s cool mountain lake district home to Ulun Danu Temple, the Botanical Gardens, strawberry farms, and adventure activities on Lake Bratan.

How do I get from Bali airport to Bedugul?

The drive from Bali airport to Bedugul takes approximately 1.5-2 hours covering 55-65 km north through Bali’s central highlands. A private transfer costs from IDR 500,000 (USD $31). Bedugul is a highland area at 1,200m elevation centered around Lake Bratan, famous for the iconic Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, Bali Botanical Gardens, the Bali Treetop Adventure Park, and cool mountain climate with temperatures 10-15°C cooler than the coast.

Getting to Bedugul from the Airport

Bedugul is Bali’s premier highland destination, a cool mountain plateau centered around three crater lakes — Bratan, Buyan, and Tamblingan — at approximately 1,200 meters above sea level. The drive from Ngurah Rai Airport takes 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic, following the main north-south route through Denpasar and Tabanan before climbing into the central highlands.

The route is: Airport → Denpasar bypass → Mengwi → Bedugul. Traffic through the Denpasar area can be heavy during morning and evening rush hours, but once you pass Mengwi the road opens up and the ascent into the mountains begins. The temperature drops noticeably as you climb, providing welcome relief from the coastal heat.

Bedugul is also the midpoint on the route to Lovina and Munduk, making it an excellent stopover if you’re heading to North Bali. Many travelers spend a night in Bedugul before continuing north the next day.

Bedugul as a Day Trip vs. Overnight

Bedugul works well as both a day trip and an overnight destination. As a day trip from southern Bali, you can visit Ulun Danu Temple, the Botanical Gardens, and Wanagiri viewpoint in 8-10 hours round trip. As an overnight stay, you gain access to early morning temple visits (virtually empty before 9 AM), sunset at the twin lakes, and the cool mountain evening atmosphere.

Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses (IDR 300,000/night) to the heritage Handara Golf Resort with its famous Bali-gate entrance. The Bedugul area has limited nightlife — it’s a destination for nature, culture, and relaxation rather than entertainment.

What should I wear to Bedugul?

Bedugul is significantly cooler than coastal Bali — typically 18-24°C. Bring a jacket or sweater, especially if visiting in the morning or evening. For temple visits, shoulders and knees must be covered (sarongs available for rent at temples).

Is Bedugul suitable for children?

Excellent for families. The Botanical Gardens have a children’s playground and the Treetop Adventure Park has courses for ages 4+. Strawberry picking is popular with kids, and the lake activities are family-friendly.

Can I combine Bedugul with Jatiluwih Rice Terraces?

Yes, Jatiluwih is approximately 30 minutes from Bedugul and makes a perfect addition to your transfer. We regularly combine airport → Jatiluwih → Bedugul as a half-day sightseeing transfer.

The Highland Lake District: Bedugul Attractions

Bedugul sits in the volcanic highlands of central Bali at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, offering a refreshingly cool climate that provides welcome relief from the tropical heat of the coastal areas. The area is centered around three crater lakes — Beratan, Buyan, and Tamblingan — each surrounded by dense tropical forest and offering different experiences for visitors. Lake Beratan is the most visited, home to the iconic Ulun Danu Beratan Temple which appears to float on the water surface during high water levels, creating one of the most photographed scenes in all of Indonesia.

The Bali Botanical Gardens, established in 1959, cover over 150 hectares of highland forest and house more than 2,000 species of plants including a remarkable collection of orchids, ferns, cacti, and traditional medicinal plants. The gardens also serve as an important conservation center for rare Balinese plant species. Walking through the misty forest paths with towering trees forming a canopy overhead provides a completely different Bali experience compared to the beaches and rice terraces that dominate most itineraries.

The traditional market at Bedugul, known as Pasar Candi Kuning, is famous for its fresh highland produce including strawberries, passion fruit, corn, and an incredible variety of spices and flowers grown in the fertile volcanic soil. Prices here are significantly lower than in tourist areas, and the market atmosphere offers an authentic glimpse into daily Balinese highland life. Our VIP transfer to Bedugul takes approximately 90 minutes from the airport and can include scenic stops at the Jatiluwih rice terraces or traditional craft villages along the route.
