Getting to Bedugul from the Airport

Bedugul is Bali’s premier highland destination, a cool mountain plateau centered around three crater lakes — Bratan, Buyan, and Tamblingan — at approximately 1,200 meters above sea level. The drive from Ngurah Rai Airport takes 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic, following the main north-south route through Denpasar and Tabanan before climbing into the central highlands.

The route is: Airport → Denpasar bypass → Mengwi → Bedugul. Traffic through the Denpasar area can be heavy during morning and evening rush hours, but once you pass Mengwi the road opens up and the ascent into the mountains begins. The temperature drops noticeably as you climb, providing welcome relief from the coastal heat.

Bedugul is also the midpoint on the route to Lovina and Munduk, making it an excellent stopover if you’re heading to North Bali. Many travelers spend a night in Bedugul before continuing north the next day.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple: Bali’s most iconic water temple, appearing to float on Lake Bratan. This photogenic Hindu-Buddhist temple complex is one of the island’s most important irrigation temples, dedicated to Dewi Danu, goddess of lakes and rivers. Entry: IDR 75,000. Bedugul as a Day Trip vs. Overnight

Bedugul works well as both a day trip and an overnight destination. As a day trip from southern Bali, you can visit Ulun Danu Temple, the Botanical Gardens, and Wanagiri viewpoint in 8-10 hours round trip. As an overnight stay, you gain access to early morning temple visits (virtually empty before 9 AM), sunset at the twin lakes, and the cool mountain evening atmosphere.

What should I wear to Bedugul?

Bedugul is significantly cooler than coastal Bali — typically 18-24°C. Bring a jacket or sweater, especially if visiting in the morning or evening. For temple visits, shoulders and knees must be covered (sarongs available for rent at temples).

Is Bedugul suitable for children?

Excellent for families. The Botanical Gardens have a children’s playground and the Treetop Adventure Park has courses for ages 4+. Strawberry picking is popular with kids, and the lake activities are family-friendly.
